Romanov Sheep: Prolific & Personable
Hailing from the Volga Valley in Russia, the Romanov is renowned worldwide for its incredible prolificacy. If you want lots of lambs, the Romanov influence is highly sought after!
Appearance & Size: Romanovs are medium-sized sheep (100-150 lbs). They are easily recognized by their unique fleece – lambs are born black and gradually lighten to a soft, double-coated grey fleece as they mature. Whether they require shearing can vary; some shed sufficiently, while others benefit from shearing. They belong to the group of Northern European short-tailed sheep.
Temperament: My experience with Romanovs has been wonderful; they are incredibly friendly and personable sheep. My ram is the friendliest boy, wagging his tail enthusiastically like a happy dog whenever he sees us, especially when getting scratches! My Romanov-cross ewes share this friendly disposition.
Care & Use: Their standout trait is litter size – twins are minimal, with triplets, quadruplets, and even larger litters being common. They also reach sexual maturity much earlier than many breeds and can breed out of season. This makes them invaluable in crossbreeding programs to boost lamb numbers. While hardy and adapted to cold, their high production requires good nutrition, especially for lactating ewes. We raise a Romanov ram and Romanov/Katahdin cross ewes, aiming to blend Romanov's prolificacy with Katahdin's excellent shedding and mothering traits.
